From Theatre Dreams To Award Wins: Cityzeen LS On His LMA24 Victory

Maseru- Every success story begins with a spark- a moment where passion meets purpose. For Mpho Mofokeng, also known as Cityzeen Ls, one of Lesotho’s rising musical stars, that spark ignited under theater lights. What started as an interest in arts turned into an award-winning career in music, guided by authenticity, collaboration and a relentless pursuit for growth.

The Origin Of A Star Cityzeen’s journey began humbly, in the world of theater. While performing on stage, a friend noticed his untapped vocal talent and encouraged him to try recording music. This moment in 2019 marked the start of his musical career. “I owe it all to that friend,”, he reflects. “He saw something in me that I did not see in myself.”

Once inspired by renowned artists such as Mlindo The Vocalist and Sjava, Cityzeen realized he, too, could leave a mark in the Lesotho music industry. He admits he was once once lost in his pursuit to finding a musical identity, and his friend and industry peer DJ Sunco, advised him to stay true to his roots and embrace use of the Sesotho language. The result of this advice led to Cityzeen’s debut song, “Ke Mosotho” - a heartfelt anthem that celebrated his heritage. This ignited a fire in the music scene.

The Sweet Taste Of Victory

Fast forward to 2024, and Cityzeen LS stood among Lesotho’s finest, clutching the “Best Collaboration/Duo” award for his wildly acclaimed single, “Bahale” featuring Sannere. “Winning was overwhelming,” he says, beaming with gratitude. “It was not just my win- it was for my supporters, collaborators and everyone who believed in me.”

Contrary to how the rest of the winners celebrated, Cityzeen marked the moment with a simple post on social media. “My supporters deserved to know this win was theirs too,” he explains.

The Making Of A Hit

For Cityzeen, music is more than sound- it is emotion personified. His creative process relies heavily on his mood. “If I am happy, I write happy songs. If I am sad, I channel that into my music too. I also allow the melody of the music to guide me,” he reveals. Clever nod to him for using melody hey?

Bahale, a tribute to Lesotho’s musical pioneers like Ntate Famole and Ntate Sanko, was no exception. Infused with spiritual energy, the song aimed to uplift listeners, empowering them to become Heroes in their own right. Quoting lines from the song’s hook, “Ka pina ke ts’oere Bahale, sechaba sa’eso se nkane,” you can tell the song has fulfilled the intended purpose as the reviews match the intention. The track, which featured Sannere, flowed effortlessly despite the anticipation of the collaborator’s verse.

A Unique Voice In Ts’epe

Cityzeen’s approach to music is refreshingly distinct. His style blends the emerging Ts’epe sound with innovative lyrical storytelling, creating a signature vibe that resonates deeply with fans. Yet, he humbly believes his listeners are the best judges of his uniqueness.

Industry Insights And Aspirations

As an award-winning artist, Cityzeen LS acknowledges the transformative role of platforms like the Lesotho Music Awards. “They validate our work and encourage us to push harder,” he shares. However, he notes that the industry, as much as it is still growing, struggles with collaboration. “We should lift each other up instead of tearing each other down,” he urges, echoing the Sotho proverb “Lets’oele le beta poho.”

Cityzeen envisions a brighter future, both for himself and the local music scene. With plans to release an Extended Play (EP) later this year and with dreams of collaborating with Nigerian superstar, Davido, thanks to his superstar power and musical prowess, one can be assured that Cityzeen’s aspirations are equally as ambitious and inspiring.

A Legacy In The Making

Through all the highs and lows, Cityzeen LS remains grounded in his faith and love for music. “I dedicate my award to God, my family, my supporters and my collaborator Sannere,” he says with heartfelt gratitude.

When asked how he wants to be remembered, his answer is simple yet profound: “As someone who released timeless classics.”

As Cityzeen LS continues his climb, one thing is clear- he is not just making music; he is creating a legacy. From his humble theater beginnings to award-winning stages, his story is a testament to the power of authenticity, collaboration, and unwavering passion.
