MASERU- Atii Zee, Lesotho’s rising music sensation, is living proof that passion, perseverance and authenticity can rewrite the rules of the game. From humble beginnings to winning the “Best Newcomer” award at the 2024 edition of the Lesotho Music Awards hosted at Victory Hall on the 29th of November, his journey is testament to how dreams can manifest into reality when fueled by dedication and self-belief.
A PERSONAL JOURNEY ROOTED IN LOVE FOR MUSIC Keketso Kabi, stage name Atii Zee, officially stepped into the music scene in June 2021. His music love affair began in grade four as he stated he drew inspiration from his older brother, Tumo Kabi, also a musician by the stage name Foxx. “I started music because of my brother,” he shares. “His hard work inspired me so much, and I wanted to do what he did. At first, it was just for fun, but now, it has become a source of income- the money now brings itself.”
His music journey took on a serious tone when he started recording in December 2020, as he drew inspiration from the global rap star, Nasty C. “I learned a lot from Nasty C, especially his versatility and how he creates music,” he explains. Atii Zee’s dedication to developing his unique sound has set him apart, making him a standout in the Lesotho music scene. “There is nobody who does music like I do in the country, and that is my biggest advantage,” he confidently states.
A LIFE CHANGING AWARD
Winning the “Best Newcomer” award has been a defining moment in Atii Zee’s career. “This award means so much to me. It proved to me and everyone else that I am capable of going far with my music,” he says. While his parents have been supportive, the win challenged their initial doubts about a music career. “Even though my parents support me, they did not fully believe I could make it. This award proves otherwise.”
The journey to receiving the award was as memorable as the accolade itself. After a performance in Leribe, Atii Zee was rushing to the ceremony when the news reached him. “I got so many calls, videos and texts telling me I had won. I was excited and scared at the same time,” he recalls. His excitement spilled over into a celebration with his team and friends, where he got numerous offers, from free photoshoots to financial gifts, as people rallied to help him mark the milestone.
“Thank you to everyone who voted for me and made this possible, I appreciate you so much,” he says with gratitude.
“THOKOZA” AND THE CREATIVE PROCESS
The turning point in Atii Zee’s career came in September 2024, with the release of his single, “THOKOZA”. “This song completely changed my life,” he reveals. “Everything I have now, including the award, is because of “THOKOZA”. It has allowed me to make a living.”
The single was inspired by his 2023 track “BREAKING NEWS”, a conversation-style based song that laid the foundation for his unique sound. “My creative process varies,” he explains. “I usually create flows and rhythms on a beat, freestyle and record myself before refining the track.” The biggest challenge, he notes, was finding the right sound engineer to mix and master his music to perfection.
It was not until his producer and those around him pointed out his distinct style that Atii Zee realised the power of his uniqueness. “Now I love and embrace my unique sound,” he says with pride. His unique sound refers to the smooth style, flow, relatability and amazing pen game, frequently heard in his music.
