Better Late Than Never: T.U.R.K's 2024 LMA Journey

Maseru- For over a decade, T.U.R.K has been carving his name into the Lesotho’s music scene, steadily building a career characterized by persistence, passion, and a relentless drive for excellence. This year, his hard work culminated in a triumphant moment at the 2024 Lesotho Music Awards (LMAs), where his debut studio album, Better Late Than Never, clinched the coveted “Music Project of the Year” award. For T.U.R.K, it was more than just a win—it was a validation of his artistry, his journey, and his unique voice in Lesotho’s music landscape.

A Journey of Tenacity and Growth T.U.R.K, who was born as Bataung Moeketsi started his music journey began back in 2008 with his first radio placement. That year marked the start of an evolving career, with the young rapper releasing mixtapes, EPs, and collaborative projects, ultimately leading to his debut studio album. Tracks like 1 9 9 X, Bluntsandraps EP, and Better Late Than Never stand out as highlights in his catalog. Along the way, milestones such as winning the Vodacom Superstars competition in 2012 and performing at high-profile events like the Back to the City Hip-Hop Festival bolstered his reputation.

Growing up abroad during his formative years gave T.U.R.K a unique perspective that blends international influences with local storytelling. Returning to Lesotho challenged him to adapt and infuse his music with narratives inspired by his surroundings while staying true to his preferred medium of expression—English. “I’ve gone from performing at high school talent shows to touching some of the biggest stages within and outside of Lesotho’s borders,” he reflects. “My journey as an independent Hip-Hop act has been one of a steady, yet slow, incline.”

The Making of “Better Late Than Never”

Released after two years of meticulous work, Better Late Than Never encapsulates T.U.R.K’s life story—a reflection of both his personal and artistic evolution. The album title’s significance isn’t lost on the artist, who admits to struggling with procrastination. “The project was inspired by my readiness to put my all into a single body of work that I could proudly call my debut studio album,” he explains.

T.U.R.K approached the album with precision, writing all the songs before stepping into the studio. This preparation allowed him to focus entirely on delivering flawless vocals. Collaborating with multiple producers gave the project a rich variety in sound while maintaining a cohesive sonic feel through consistent mixing and mastering at one studio. However, the process wasn’t without its challenges. “Money is always a factor,” he notes, “from purchasing beats to recording and promoting. And as a perfectionist, knowing when to say ‘it’s done’ was tough. But the delays were worth it because the final product came out exactly as it should.”

The Moment of Triumph

Winning the LMA for “Music Project of the Year” was an emotional moment for T.U.R.K. “I didn’t hear my name at first because it was mispronounced,” he laughs, recalling the night. “But as soon as I heard ‘Better Late Than Never’ and the beat drop to my song ‘All I Know’, I felt ecstatic and overwhelmed. I hadn’t expected to win, especially against artists beloved by the masses. It was humbling and surprising!” He exclaimed.

The award marked a personal and professional milestone for T.U.R.K. “It justified the hard work that went into the album and vindicated me as an artist with tenure, who doesn’t always get the same recognition as peers,” he shares. The win, he adds, also fueled his ambition. “I’m getting right back to work and planning ahead for 2025. I aim to bag the same award again—if not more.”

The Vision for Lesotho’s Music Industry

While the win was significant, T.U.R.K recognizes the broader challenges within Lesotho’s music ecosystem. “Platforms like the LMAs are vital for identifying talent and inspiring other artists. But the organization needs wider recognition and buy-in from external stakeholders to reach its full potential,” he says. T.U.R.K envisions an industry supported by robust copyright laws, fair royalty systems, and professional management structures to create a thriving ecosystem where artists can sustainably earn a living.

For T.U.R.K, the uniqueness of his sound lies in his production choices, English lyrics, and innovative approach to music-making. “There’s no mistaking T.U.R.K for anyone else,” he asserts. “I don’t sound like anyone, nor do I care to.”

Looking Ahead

As he basks in his recent success, T.U.R.K remains focused on the future. With plans for a sophomore album set for late 2025 and collaborations with local and international artists on the horizon, he’s eager to expand his brand. He dreams of touring the world and establishing himself as a global artist. Locally, he hopes to collaborate with the renowned vocalist, Leomile to recreate the nostalgic Hip-Hop/R&B vibes of the early 2000s.

A Legacy of Dedication

Through his journey, T.U.R.K has learned the importance of humility, focus, and relentless pursuit. “Unnecessary ego has derailed many careers,” he cautions. As he looks ahead, his goal is clear: to create music that resonates deeply and to leave a legacy of true artistry and perseverance.

“To my supporters, friends and family, KEA LEBOHA! Your continued support means the world to me. Together, we’ll reach greater heights.”

Once again, congratulations to T.U.R.K on his LMAs win, we hope he gets his Ella Mai and finally gets boo’d up.
