MASERU - FROM HIGH SCHOOL NICKNAME TO MUSICAL IDENTITY - What started as a nickname from high school friends has now become a recognized name in the music industry- Shashie. At first, he disliked the name, but as more people started calling him that, he embraced it, and today, it stands as a symbol of his journey in music.
INSPIRED BY FAMILY, INFLUENCED BY LEGENDS Shashie’s passion for music was ignited by his late aunt, who used to sing for him in church, and his grandfather, who was also a talented singer. His sound is shaped by some of the biggest names in the industry, including Samthing Soweto, The Soil, Sjava, Malome Vector, Ntate Stunna, DJ Maphorisa, and Blaq Diamond. These artists influenced his musical approach, blending storytelling with soulful, international sounds.
A UNIQUE AND GLOBAL SOUND
Unlike many artists, Shashie’s music is not confined to a single genre or local trend. He prides himself on having an international sound, which has given him opportunities to collaborate with artists beyond Lesotho’s borders. His goal is to make music that resonates globally while staying true to his roots.
OVERCOMING CHALLENGES IN THE INDUSTRY
Like many upcoming artists, Shashie has faced numerous challenges, from struggling to find studios to record in to dealing with a lack of support. Despite these obstacles, he has remained focused on his dream, using his experiences to fuel his passion and determination.
A JOURNEY SHAPED BY DIVERSE BACKGROUNDS
Shashie’s upbringing played a crucial role in shaping his music. Having lived in different environments- from growing up in rural areas, herding cattle, and attending Motebong (traditional school), to experiencing the fast-paced life of Soweto- his music reflects the diversity of his life. These influences bring an authentic and relatable touch to his storytelling
THE MAKING OF SWEETY LAVO
Shashie’s latest single, Sweety Lavo, is a love song inspired by the real-life relationship of his brother, PabloDJ, and his girlfriend, Sellwane Thakanyane. The track was born when he and his longtime friend and collaborator, Muziqal Guru came up with the idea and chorus, which was then shared with his manager. Recognizing the potential, they reached out to iNkabi Nation’s first lady, Lwah Ndlunkulu, who loved the song and recorded her verse.
Later, Shashie MET Ubuntu Band from Botswana at The Whole Time Studio and played them the track. Instantly hooked, they decided to jump on the song. With additional contributions from Nollzuus, Muziqal Guru, and Redash, the final product was a masterpiece. The energy in the studio that day confirmed what they all felt- Sweety Lavo was a hit
TAKING LESOTHO’S MUSIC TO THE WORLD
Shashie’s ultimate dream is to elevate Lesotho’s music scene to an international level. He envisions a future where local artists get recognized globally, collaborate with international musicians, and secure performances worldwide. Following Sweety Lavo, he promises his fans even more diverse collaborations and fresh sounds.
His current focus is expanding his brand across different countries to open doors for global gigs and partnerships. Looking ahead, he hopes to work the industry heavyweights like Big Zulu, Kelvin Momo, Kabza De Small, and Samthing Soweto.
WORDS OF WISDOM FOR UPCOMING ARTISTS
For those walking the same path, Shashie’s advice is simple: believe in yourself and work hard. He emphasizes that success in music is possible with persistence and dedication. Despite the challenges, he remains motivated by his love for music and personal goals.
A LEGACY BEYOND MUSIC
Beyond making hits, Shashie wants to be remembered as someone who gave back to the industry. He dreams of helping upcoming artists, creating opportunities for new talent, and ensuring the next generation has the support he once lacked.
With unwavering determination, a unique sound, and a growing international presence, Shashie is on the path to greatness. His journey is only beginning, and the world is starting to take notice.
