Sannere Crowned Twice At The Lesotho Music Awards: Artist And Song Of The Year

Maseru- Sannere’s meteoric rise continues, reaching a historic milestone at the 2024 Lesotho Music Awards (LMAs) making history as the first artist to take home the coveted “Artist” & “Song Of The Year” awards in one night. These accolades marked the apex of a transformative journey, underscored by his bold creativity, unrelenting work ethic, and deep connection to his Basotho roots.

The Stardom Journey Relebohile Monaphathi, stage name; Sannere began his musical odyssey in 2018, rapping in English before making a life-changing decision in 2022. Seeking a sound that set him apart from the rest, he took a hiatus in 2021 to reinvent his artistry. “The break was the best decision of my career,” Sannere reflects. “In 2022, I returned with a distinct sound that led to my breakthrough in 2024. It was a risk, but it paid off.”

This journey was not without its influences. Inspired by homegrown talents- MIP and Sthola, and encouraged by supportive friends, Sannere leaned into his Lesotho upbringing. “Being Mosotho helped me embrace authenticity. I proudly represent Lesotho through my music, showing the world our rich culture,” he said.

Winning Big

Taking home the “Artist and Song Of The Year” awards left Sannere overwhelmed. “The win affirmed three things: I need to keep going, I have not reached my full potential, and I must work twice as hard to sustain this success,” he said. The winning song, “Ha Le Felile U Njoetse,” is part of a love-themed series that began with “Lerato.” It captured listeners’ hearts with its seamless storytelling and soulful rhythm.

Sannere celebrated his victory in a unique way- by heading straight back to studio. “The excitement fueled my creativity, I have been working nonstop since,” he said. Despite his rising fame, Sannere stays grounded, crediting his fans for his success. “To my supporters, I am forever grateful. Your love keeps me going, and I hope to make you proud at the next LMAs.”

The Creative Genius

Sannere’s creative process is as unorthodox as it is effective. “I do not plan; when I am in the studio, everything just flows naturally,” he explained. This instinctive approach helped him craft the award-winning “ Ha Le Felile U Njoetse,” which he describes as a smooth transition from “Lerato.”

His music is not just entertainment- it is education. “I see myself as a teacher. My music introduces people to Sesotho language, culture, and heritage,” Sannere said. This commitment to cultural preservation has set him apart in an increasingly globalized industry.

Industry And Legacy

For Sannere, the Lesotho Music Awards are more than just accolades- they are a beacon of hope for aspiring artists. “The LMAs inspire us to work harder and show the world what Basotho artists can achieve. It is an honor to be recognized,” he said. Looking ahead, Sannere envisions a unified music industry. “We need to collaborate more. Like the Sesotho saying goes, ‘Lefu la noha ke ho tsamaea e le nngoe,’ unity is our strength,” he emphasized.

What’s Next?

Sannere’s ambitions extend far beyond Lesotho. In the next five years, he dreams of performing in Egypt, showcasing Sesotho culture on an international stage. He also hopes to collaborate with international artists like Lwah Ndlunkulu and Emtee, multiple of whom he has had the pleasure of meeting. “They inspire me, and I love listening to their music, so working with them would be a dream come true,” he exclaimed.

While tight-lipped about an upcoming release, Sannere teased a new track set to drop later this month.

“Let us keep it a surprise,” he joked.

A Legacy In The Making

Sannere hopes his music will be remembered as timeless and his legacy as profound as that of Morena Moshoeshoe I. “ Music is like pursuing a girl- you give it your all, and if you do it right, it takes care of you. That is what I want for my music: to nurture and inspire for generations to come,” he said.

With two LMAs under his belt and an unstoppable drive, Sannere is not just an artist but a movement, carrying the pride and potential of Lesotho to new heights.
