Celebrating The Legacy Of Lisuoa: A Musical Genius Remembered

Maseru- The Lesotho Music Awards (LMAs) recently honored the late Lisuoa, known to many as a trailblazer in the Famo music scene, by posthumously awarding him the title of “Best Famo Act”. In a touching tribute, his daughter, Mahali Thabanamahlanya, accepted the award on his behalf, reflecting on her father’s journey, creativity, and impact. Filling his big shoes, Mahali shared insights into his life and the profound meaning of his recognition.

A Late Start, A Lifelong Impact Unlike many artists whose musical journeys date back to their childhood, Lisuoa discovered his passion for music later in life. It was while living in Virginia, Free State, that he came to be captivated by the work of Ntate Khauta.

Encouraged by Ntate Khauta and Ntate Lekase, who taught him the ropes and included him as their backup vocalist, Lisuoa eventually took the leap of faith and started recording his own music. His journey from a photographer to a celebrated musician was fueled by his belief in his potential to be a musical genius and the inspiration he drew from his peers.

Growing up in Lesotho deeply influenced Lisuoa’s music. His lyrics celebrated his culture, heritage, and the everyday realities of Basotho. From initiation ceremonies to broader social norms, his sharpened storytelling highlighted his pride in his upbringing, resonating with fans across generations.

A Night To Remember

The announcement of Lisuoa’s win was a moment of profound emotion for Mahali. “When I heard his name being called, it felt like the world stopped,” she shares. “I could hear his voice in my head telling me, ‘You got this!’” While the win did not come as a complete surprise to Mahali, it marked a significant milestone in her father’s legacy.

Reflecting on the experience, Mahali expressed gratitude to the fans who supported Lisuoa’s music. “This is not my win alone,” she said. “To quote my father, ‘Lumelang Lironoko, Lumelang,’ as a nod to his loyal supporters.” Although her busy schedule has limited her celebrations, Mahali’s gratitude shines through in her prayers and acknowledgement of her ancestors.

A Unique Voice In Famo Music

Lisuoa’s creativity extended beyond lyrics. He crafted beats in his mind and guided his producers to bring his vision to life. His process was unconventional but effective, often freestyling during recording to capture the perfect sound. “Tsatsi La Botlokotsebe,” a favorite among fans, exemplifies his musical genius status. Despite being influenced by Ntate Khauta and Ntate Lekase, Lisuoa’s sound has remained distinctly unique, a testament to his authenticity.

A Growing Industry

The recognition Lisuoa received at the LMAs reflect the progress in versatility for the Lesotho music industry. Platforms like these not only celebrate local talent but also inspire artists to strive for excellence. Mahali believes that collaboration, rather than competition, is key to furthering the industry’s growth. “I wish artists could use their influence to positively impact others,” she said, emphasizing the need for unity and purpose within the music community.

Preserving A Legacy

Looking ahead, Mahali is committed to preserving her father’s legacy. She announced the upcoming release of a posthumous single “Lironoko 2”, set to drop on January 13, 2025. The single, which will be available on major streaming platforms, is a continuation of Lisuoa’s storytelling and artistry.

In closing, Mahali expressed heartfelt gratitude to Lisuoa’s supporters. “Thank you for consistently showing his music love. I hope he continues to rest in peace, and I will always strive to honor his legacy.” As this story comes full circle, it is clear that Lisuoa’s voice, though silenced, continues to echo through the lives he touched and the music he created.
